Today’s cup: Tunisia, gestational carriers and Mark Kelly got a neck massage

The House today is expected to take up conversation about repealing the health care bill.  Democrats, normally defensive and wimpy, are looking forward to demonstrating, more so then when the legislation was first debated last year, just exactly how this bill helps, has already helped, Americans receive care for what ails them in ways they were unable to before the bill was signed in March.  Republicans, with their new majority in the House, will vote Wednesday to repeal the legislation, a … [Read more...]

Today’s cup: Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, “Baby Doc” Duvalier and Ricky Gervais

Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, looking frail since recovering from pancreatic cancer in 2004 and a liver transplant in 2009, Monday began another medical leave of absence.  Timothy Cook, Apple's COO will take over so Jobs "can focus on my health". Today, the country celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.  The Boston Globe honors the day with a piece that includes the entire text from Time Magazine when King became their Man of the Year in 1964.  When is the last time you read the text of … [Read more...]

Today’s cup: Obama in Arizona, Lebanon, Carolyn McCarthy and the NFL offensive line

Obama spoke at yesterday's public memorial for the victims of the Tucson shootings.  I was moved to tears, not necessarily because of what he said and how he said it  (you can watch the entire speech here at C-SPAN), but because of who was there - the victims' families - and why they were there.  It's all just so sad.  It was lovely to include personal stories for each victim, as Obama did.  He also mentioned widening the circle of our concern.  Let's not be afraid to do that.  Back in … [Read more...]

Today’s cup: Verizon’s iPhone, Palin on Arizona and a run on Glocks

Last night, Jon Stewart and John Oliver did such a fine job of putting across the elation felt by many over the announcement of the Verizon iPhone, I'll just let you take a look at the clip.  The Christian Science Monitor breaks down the five compelling reasons to buy one in February, and five reasons why you might stay with AT&T.  I have a 3G, so I may be out of luck, but it doesn't mean I can't appreciate the joy this announcement brought my fellow iPhone users - "Hello?  Hello?  Are you … [Read more...]

Friday fodder: shove/ram/jam and other things I don’t understand

The world: Toyota will be in the news for some time.  People are jumping on the “blame Toyota” bandwagon every day, even if the faulty car they’re currently driving is a 1987 Renault.  Edmunds.com is offering $1 million dollars to the person who can solve Toyota’s “unintended acceleration problem”.  I’m a little disturbed that Edmunds doesn’t think the Japanese carmaker can come up with a solution themselves, though they haven’t exactly instilled great confidence in owners of Toyota vehicles … [Read more...]

Day 3: surviving our new reality

I started writing this on Day 2. New ideas come up and I tweak the post. I realize I work at a school and so bad words are now ****. It’s so very stupid but nothing about this week makes sense to me. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross needs to come back from the grave and give us the five stages of post-election insanity. Recovery must include puppies. Anyhow, here’s what I have today: If you’re a Facebook friend of mine, you know that for me, the hardest part of Tuesday night was being a parent. I felt … [Read more...]
