Imagine if you will (for those inclined to vote for Trump)

Remember, no less than the fate of our Republic is at stake.

Regarding Trump, I can’t imagine anything has been left unsaid but still I feel it necessary to say something. No less than the fate of our Republic is at stake. And no, I’m not kidding. - Imagine your ten-year-old son asks: “Did you see the video of Trump making fun of the guy with the funny arm?” “Yes,” you answer. “Mom said you were voting for him?” “I am.” “Why? He made fun of that guy. That’s so mean.” “Because, um, he’s going to make this country great again. And I always … [Read more...]

Parents, judge not, lest ye can’t help yourself

Savage Chickens cartoon

I can’t. Early on in motherhood, I realized how important it was not to judge how others were raising their children.  I thought no one really knew the dynamic of parent and child except the parent and child themselves.  That little boy with questionable social skills who used to walk around the jungle gym half spaced-out?  Diagnosed with Asperger’s.  The sullen teammate who sat on the sidelines and refused to participate?  Turns out she has a severely disabled sibling.  It doesn’t take much … [Read more...]

Colorado

“The suspect was in possession of a clip with more than 20 rounds, a federal official said, that would have been illegal under an assault rifle ban that expired in 2004.”  - New York Times, July 20, 2012 I’m going to do it.  I’m going to once again jump into the fray because I told my husband on the phone today I didn’t want to.  “I’m just one voice among millions and I’m tired,” I said.  We’re all tired.  Not “I need to take a nap” tired, but weary -- of the pain, the sadness, the … [Read more...]

Monday motherhood: orthodontia and why I hate my life (sometimes)

This morning, Bun Bun had to visit the orthodontist to have a piece of metal put back on one of her teeth.  It’s part of the head gear she wears to help straighten her smile and the whole ordeal is so much more trouble than I anticipated.  Whatever.  When I called on Friday to let them know this piece had fallen off, they scheduled us for Monday morning.  “Don’t forget to bring in the head gear,” were the last words I heard the dental assistant say.  We put it in a plastic bag and Bun Bun … [Read more...]

Today’s cup: the Patriot Act, Air France jet’s final minutes, Sudan, and the French Open

Extending certain provisions of the Patriot Act came down to the wire approaching midnight Thursday, when they were set to expire, thanks to the stubbornness of Kentucky senator Rand Paul.  Paul, a freshman in Congress and great protector of Second Amendment rights, wanted to make it more difficult, nee impossible, for the government to snoop around in the gun ownership records of persons suspected of having terrorist ties, so he forced a vote on amendments he added to the bill, and lost … [Read more...]

Today’s cup: Patraeus and Panetta, tornadoes, and Obama’s birth certificate!

Robert Gates will step down as Defense Secretary as planned, likely this summer, and will be replaced by CIA director Leon Panetta, according to the Associated Press.  Obama’s choice to take over at Intelligence is General David Patraeus, currently heading up our efforts in Afghanistan. I bet Patraeus won’t be sad to leave a country that continues to suck the life out of itself, NATO and America.  An Afghan military pilot at a training center in Kabul killed eight NATO forces and a private … [Read more...]
