Monday motherhood: it’s not that I don’t like my kids

I do.  We’ve had a fun time together these past few weeks.  And the three of them seem to have bonded with each other more so than past summers.  There’s been laughter, hugs, extreme silliness, and lots of ice cream.  Speaking of, has anyone tried the Kroger Private Selection flavor, Sea Salt Caramel Truffle?  Outrageous.  Summer has to end because if, as a family, we continue to consume the stuff in the massive quantities of the past two months, there will be heart disease with which to contend … [Read more...]

Friday fodder: a terrible crash, a teachable moment

- A little over a mile from our house, a terrible accident took place Wednesday night.  I heard about it on Facebook Thursday morning and it ended up on the front page of the LA Times today.  In short, a speeding SUV crashed into a utility pole and a fire hydrant, creating a growing puddle of electrified water.  Among many witnesses was a Good Samaritan who rushed out of her car as her husband dialed 911.  She was electrocuted and died before she even reached the driver of the SUV.  A short time … [Read more...]

Summer’s fade: Arrowhead, more vacuuming, and Disneyland

We’re a lucky bunch, those of us who live in Los Angeles.  It’s not a city anywhere near the top of my list in terms of favorites, but what’s close by, what we can take advantage of within hours, is diverse.  Slouching into the final two weeks of summer vacation for our family, we decided to head up to the mountains for a few days last week and escape some oppressive heat.  We chose Lake Arrowhead, a mere ninety minutes from our front door. The Lake Arrowhead Spa and Resort should have a … [Read more...]

Wednesday: I have a moment, but just one

We painted Goldie’s room a deep purple this week.  Thought you should know.  With the rich brown low-shag carpeting she has, it feels like a den of iniquity.  Is that inappropriate for a 13-year-old? When the husband told me Paul Ryan was going to be Mitt’s running mate, my response was, “He has sparkly eyes.”  It’s the first thing you notice about the guy.  My next thought was, “Ugh.”  Ryan represents the extreme fiscal conservatives who, frankly, make no sense to me.  Any budget that … [Read more...]

Motherhood in August

The girls and I were invited over to a friend’s tomorrow to watch the USA women play in the Olympic soccer final.  I had a crowd over on Monday to watch the semi-final and felt whole again after two hours of hanging with adults, screaming, talking, experiencing the energy of persons over the age of thirteen.  It meant a lot to me.  Last night after soccer practice, I told Bun Bun where we were watching the game on Thursday and she quietly said (because everything she says is quiet), “I like … [Read more...]

Random: the Olympics, Chick-fil-A, Mitt’s taxes, and guns

Bun Bun turned eleven on Tuesday.  She wanted a phone for her big gift; she got a bike.  So it was a good birthday but in no way was it the best one ever.  In terms of children, you can never win.  It’s not a contest, but still. I hate that the head of Chick-fil-A is against gay marriage, but can I be honest?  The restaurant chain hasn’t been in Los Angeles all that long and I’ve been meaning to head over to Hollywood with the girls one afternoon (it would kill at least an hour) to try their … [Read more...]
