Wednesdays with Wendy: Haiti and gay marriage

It was dark and rainy when I woke this morning to meet up with Wendy for our run.  I cursed her name when the alarm went off, had some coffee, laced up the Asics and drove to her house.  I would’ve run there but, were you not listening? It was dark and rainy.  We talked about our dogs because we always do.  There was chat about TBI Marco because there always is.  He’s amazing.  And then there was this: Let me just say, yesterday I wrote of flashlights and earthquakes hours before a massive … [Read more...]

Saturday run

I did sixteen miles today because I’m training for the Los Angeles Marathon in March.  If you ever come across anyone who runs that kind of mileage for fun, excuse yourself from their company because there’s something wrong with them.  Running sixteen miles is not fun.  Sitting on the couch afterwards watching your New York Jets win their playoff game while polishing off a bag of Trader Joe’s Kettle Corn and not worrying about the calories consumed IS fun.  And that’s why I slogged for well over … [Read more...]

Wednesdays with Wendy: water and Mt. Kilimanjaro

Wendy is my dear friend and running partner who I met in the early 90s through an eclectic group of weekend warriors known as the Flying Squirrels.  She’s a partner in a downtown Los Angeles law firm, so if you’re faithful to DailyCupofJo.com, you just may glean some free legal advice from time to time.  We try to run together once during the workweek and again on Saturdays.  This past year, all three of my daughters played soccer, which really put a chink in the Saturday six (the amount of … [Read more...]

I sought refuge up the street on the final day of Christmas coffee

On the 18th day of Christmas coffee, my true love gave to me, a double cappuccino -- Christmas was good.  My kids are old enough now that I don’t have to spend the entire time at my sister’s house on Christmas evening untwisting and liberating toys attached to cardboard like Hannibal Lecter was attached to that hand truck dolly.  What is up with that?  You’re finally done untwisting and discover microscopic threads securing Barbie’s hair.  Or worse, the talking puppy you just unleashed needs … [Read more...]

I had a major headache on the 10th day of Christmas…coffee

On the 10th day of Christmas…coffee, my true love gave to me TEN drummers drumming – What?  You don’t think I know what you’re going to say?  The drummers drummed on the 12th day of Christmas.  Well, in case you haven’t noticed by now, my song covers 18 days and it’s totally different from that other one.  Besides, I had a nagging headache on the 10th day (I know, I’m still way behind) and it felt like there were exactly twelve drummers drumming in my head.  Why the headache you ask?  As if you … [Read more...]

My in-laws are in town for the 9th day of Christmas…coffee

On the 9th day of Christmas…coffee, my true love gave to me NINE bites of coffee cake – My in-laws arrived a couple of nights ago and are staying at our house for two weeks.  My three children started their seventeen-day winter break this morning and are home full-time.  Naturally, I did what any mother would do when faced with a similar confluence of darkness. I ate.  Nine bites of coffee cake, warm out of the oven.  Problem is, I lie like a rug.  There is no darkness.  I adore my husband’s … [Read more...]
