The Tea Party Caucus sucks (and I hate them)

I’ll get into this further tomorrow (or not) but my former template/theme for Daily Cup was old and tired and irretrievably broken.  Glenn and I created this new one and I hope you like it.  If you don’t, please keep it to yourself.  I’m sensitive.  Besides, we’re still tweaking.  Also, content is what it’s all about.  Substance over style.  Speaking of content (we were):  On public radio last night, I listened as pundits discussed the latest news from Washington and what it meant for … [Read more...]

Today’s cup: Liz, Qadafi won’t give up, Japan’s $$ woes, Affordable Care Act turns 1, and Maira Kalman

Elizabeth Taylor might be known to more people for the number of times she married, but in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, her skill as an actress was on generous display.  Playing Martha to Richard Burton’s George, she won the Oscar for Best Actress in the 1966 film directed by Mike Nichols.  Taylor died today in Los Angeles at age 79 from congestive heart failure. Despite the efforts of the U.S., France, Britain and others, Libyan forces loyal to Moammar Qadafi (I’ve decided to try a … [Read more...]

Saturday cafe: where I talk about Friday fodder

Crazy week.  How ‘bout you?  The girls started spring break yesterday for SEVENTEEN DAYS.  Expect more parenting observations than usual on this here Daily Cup of Jo. Imagine you’re sitting at a sidewalk café on a Saturday afternoon.  I know a lot of people are, in fact, doing just that.  I saw them from the inside of my minivan while I was shuttling around this morning and I pictured myself sitting next to them, sipping a latte, smoking a cigarette, gesticulating with my hands because I’m … [Read more...]

Friday fodder: Tiger Woods helps Kim Jong Il celebrate the big 6-8 in Vancouver

Wow.  No.  That wasn’t what I meant.  I’m just sooooo tired, but this time, I’m not going to blame NBC.  Like Tiger, I have my own mea culpa.  I knew Evan Lysacek won the gold in men’s figure skating.  It said so yesterday afternoon on my Yahoo homepage.  On the car radio, I also heard that Lindsay Vonn went down after missing a gate.  Still, I had to see for myself.  It wasn’t as if I thought there would be a different result, or even that I wanted one.  I just can’t help myself.  I am, and … [Read more...]

Monday morning quarterback: I’m feeling all hopey-changey

I am.  I can’t help it.  The Saints won the Super Bowl which means that all of my hopes will be fulfilled and a change is gonna come.  The needy shall no longer want.  The hungry will be fed.  The sick will be cured.  The clouds will part and the sun will shine and Sarah Palin will go back to Alaska and promise not to ever speak again. THERE WILL BE PEACE ON EARTH BECAUSE THE SAINTS WON THE SUPER BOWL!   Amen. Seriously, I’m happy they won.  I’m happy for the players and the fans … [Read more...]
